Thompson’s patience and consistent golf paid off as his scores of 70,72 and 70 for 212 were two shots to the good for the title. Runner up, Stephen Ferreira, settled for second place with scores of 67,72 and 75 for 214. He was undone by the 3 over par 75 in the final round.

“As you know 25 years ago I decided to give up the game to concentrate on business and to come back and win on the Zambezi Tour after turning professional last year is a wonderful feeling,” he said.

Thompson’s talent has never been in doubt. What has always been the question is how he would be able to balance his business and as a professional golfer.

As evidenced by his participation this year in the following tournament; Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open, AfrAsia Bank Mauritius qualifiers, Sun City Challenge qualifier, the there is enough to suggest that business and golf now co-exist in his life.

In his remarks as the Hwange Open Champion, Thompson had this to say; “To get my first win in Hwange, a place with a rich history as the likes of Nick Price and Tony Johnstone have also won here. It makes this win even more special.

“I would want to take this opportunity applaud the sponsors and Zambezi Tour and all those behind the scenes for ensuring that the Hwange Open remains one of the top tournaments on the local circuit.”

Stephen Ferreira, making his intention clear with a sweet 5 under par 67 on day one of the tournament, slowed down with a level par 72 on day two. He blew his chances away with 3 over par 75 on the final day.

Amateur, Robson Chinhoi, had his presence felt slugging it out with the professionals after carding 68, 74 and 72 for 2014. His exploits earned him the amateur honors for the tournament.
