The Zimbabwe Under 21 Women’s Hockey team has qualified for the 2016 World Cup. In a nail-biting semi-final of the u21 Africa Junior World Cup Qualifiers, Zimbabwe beat Namibia 2-1 effectively ending the host’s dream.
Namibia scored an early goal through Carla Brits after 8 minutes, but Zimbabwe equalized through Kelly Diplock barely three minutes later.
Namibia retained most of the possession, but was unable to score another goal to take back the lead.
In the second half Zimbabwe clinched the lead after a goal by Stephanie Campbell from a counter attack.
In the final minutes of the match, the Namibian team desperately tried to find an equaliser, but the Zimbabwean defense stood firm.
With the top two African teams qualifying for the World Cup, Namibia’s hopes of qualification came to an end with the final whistle.
South Africa will be joining Zimbabwe as African representatives at the World Cup, after winning 31-0 against Tanzania in the first semi-final.
