SOS PRIMARY SCHOOL –A POTENTIAL HOCKEY POWER HOUSE

SOS Hermann Gmeiner Primary School in Buiawayo has proved to be a force to reckon with in hockey. Its peers can only watch in awe of the school’s progress and the boys and girls of SOS are relentless…..you cannot ignore their impact in hockey!

The year 2009 was a bitter sweet season for the school. The boys bagged both the M.C.S George Mitchell   and the Baines trophies. However, they lost in the final to C.B.C in the Jen Townsend tournament.   The girls were struggled with form but still won the Baines trophy.

SOS girls were in devastating form in 2010 clinically crushing Whitestone 2-0, Carmel 5-1, Convent 2-1, St Thomas 2-1, Petra 2-1, Baines 7-0, Masiye 3-2, Portland 4-0.The girls had the swag and unstoppable in the Whitestone Festival. A trip to Gweru M.C.S for a tournament saw them come tops again while the Baines Festival saw the team settle for second best.

Such is the strength of SOS School’s hockey that, in 2011, its fillies proved to be future of the girls team as they opened the season with all smiles by winning the Shermann Barna Shield including all their friendlies. To top it all one of ther girls made it into the Provincial team. The boys did not play all season due to lack of equipment.

In 2012 the Fillies retained their trophy while the seniors were tops at Whitestone. It was a different script for the boys as they lost all their games for the season. SOS Bulawayo hockey teams had the opportunity to play its sister school from Harare…. needless to say Bulawayo girls’ class was on display.

The year 2013, must have been a “disappointing” one for SOS. The Fillies failed to defend the trophy this time as they lost to Kyle in the final. On the same day the senior girls were playing Whitestone and also made it tops in their group stages by winning all their games. The teams travelled to Gweru M.C.S unfortunately they didn’t manage to bring any silverware back home despite them winning all their friendlies.

2014 was another tough season for SOS boys and girls. However the girls still retained the  Whitestone Festival as champs. There was no joy on the teams’ travel to Gweru but no joy came out from both teams. .Both teams took part in the Jen Townsend Tournament and the girls came 2nd and boys 3rd….which by the high standards they set for themselves, was not acceptable!

In 2015 the girls came back rejuvenated, winning all their games at Whitestone. The teams travelled to Gweru and the girls came 2nd and the boys 3rd out of 6 schools.

2016 is a historic year for SOS….Winning 5 trophies in the season was just unthinkable!

The Fillies took part in the PETRA Mini Hockey Tournament where 14 schools from various parts of the country and also from Botswana and Zambia took part.  SOS girls emerged winners of the tournament.  In a set up similar to the above tournament our senior girls won the Whitestone Hockey Tournament.

SOS girls also won the annual MIDLANDS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT held at MCS involving six schools from Midlands, Harare and Bulawayo Provinces.  In the Jen Townsend, both teams made history by winning a brace as this has never happened in the Jen Townsend tournament. They won all their games at the tournament.
